Should High School Students have a Part-Time job? When exploring the issue of high school students and work, Paul Mitchell, a spokesperson for Karcher Enterpries, states that a student’s first time job is “a tremendous working experience.” But is working long hours, while trying to balance school work and social time really a tremendous experience? Shelly Staats a working high school senior, states that “after awhile, it just wears you out.” Staats along with many other working students agree that working a part time job, while going to school can often be an emotional and physical struggle that can eventually lead to dropping out of school, drug abuse, bad spending habits and in most cases an increased cynicism about the working world. This shows that working at a part time job while attending high school, can lead to many ongoing problems in the future. The thought of dropping out of high school is one many students face throughout the years, but when work is added into the scene, students feel that quitting school is their only option.
