Sacred to Many Sacred to All

The sound of the call to prayer for the Muslim faith ringing through the city walls, the hushed murmur of prayer along the Western Wall, the sun rising over Bethlehem: all fixed at one point, Jerusalem. It is sometimes difficult to discern sacred space from profane space when dealing with a non-religious man. It is as equally difficult to define sacred space to a man who believes in something different than what the space was founded upon. However, no matter what kind of man one is, Jerusalem is truly sacred space. "Sacred space" as defined by Mircea Eliade in his book, The Sacred and The Profane: The Nature of Religion, is "a strong significant space…a sacred place constitutes a break in homogeneity of space…the highest land…the axis mundi." Eliade proceeds to explore the many aspects of what makes space holy or sacred, each element remarkably found in what is now called modern day Jerusalem. Jerusalem holds some of the most sacred places on earth within its walls. ... The religious history and pure religious significance of Jerusalem all come together to be the highest example of what Eliade wishes to prove, sacred space exists, and sacred space is found in the holy city of Jerusalem. ... Judaism is perhaps where all the sacred aspects of the holy city are found. The Temple Mount, Western Wall, religious text, all come together to form this axis mundi, or center, of the Jewish world. ... While the city itself if unequivocally holy, the threshold or boundary where passage from profane to sacred world becomes possible are found at the cities most highly religious areas.
