Socrates vs Martin Luther King Jr

Although Socrates and Martin Luther King Jr. lived in completely different time periods, Socrates before Christ was born and King in the 20th century, they shared similar views. In fact, Martin Luther King was studied Socrates and used many of his ideas in his speeches and publications, such as Letter From Birmingham Jail. King believes that “Just as Socrates felt it was necessary to create a tension in the mind…. ... ” Both Socrates and King committed acts of civil disobedience and brought about some form of freedom. As King writes in Letter From Birmingham Jail, “To a degree, academic freedom is a reality today because Socrates practiced civil disobedience.” Because Socrates was not afraid to speak freely and teach others too as well, although it was against the law of the Romans, academic freedom came about.
