Sacred Choices

Sacred Choices Coming from a Catholic upbringing and knowing how strict the church is on the topics of sexuality and the right to live, this book became a real eye opener to me. I was not aware that certain world religions (even Catholicism at times) could have favorable or pluristic views on the matters of contraception and abortion. It actually relieved me to realize that although religions have their distinct views and age old traditions, they acknowledge the fact that the future of the world is in peril. They have a tremendous role in addressing our problems of overpopulation, overconsumption, and the degradation of our environment. There are several reasons that people may want to have many children. A few of those reasons are unhealthy unfortunately. In distressed situations, young women feel that the only love relationship they can truly count on is the mother-child relationship. Therefore they get pregnant without really having the preparation necessary to parent the child. Another reason is the marrying of women at a very young age. In the U.S. having a lot of children is generally conceived negatively as having “mouths to feed”. But in poorer countries having a lot of children could generally be seen as a good thing because the children could be a financial asset and assist in labor. In many parts of the world, nutrition and medicine are meager therefore parents may need to produce ten or eleven children just so that three or four will survive into adulthood. Finally, there could also be a lack of contraceptives. Many poor people cannot afford family planning because they do not get that aid from foreign and national governments. This is probably due to the fact that the governent could be influenced by conventional religion. That influence does not help educate poor people on family planning therefore the cycle of despair continues. However the religions are trying to help fix the situation. The Roman catholic church which is well known for its strict views on sexuality has now many theologians acknowledging the fact that children should only be brought into a unburdened environment therefore contraceptive sex is justified.
