Computer Sciences and Sociology

Abstract: This essay paper explores the impact of Computer Sciences in society and how it will affect modern sociology. ... The Computer Sciences, which is my major, is interestingly enough at the forefront of not only the changes have occurred, but also of trying to analyze those changes and predict the future changes. While all different aspects of societal study and interactions have their impact, it is the computer sciences that are going to be able to have the greatest impact, both in the concrete changing of society and the abstract study of societal changes and attitudes. ... That change has not only impacted the way we think and act and use our resources, but has allowed computer sciences to play a bigger role in providing for, assisting and understanding today’s society and its needs. ... In the past this was the need to speak the same language of the others around you, and while that might not have changed in spirit, the new language of society is the computer language, for those who are not computer literate will find the same problems dealing and thriving in society as immigrants who spoke a foreign language did in the first half of the 20th Century. ... This is one area where those studying computer sciences must be aware of the differences between spoken and computer communication so that they can address the various issues that can impact communication.
Sociology investigates the number of different ways in which people interact with each other, most notably the social structure and social groups of society. ... It is easy to see within these groups, the impact that computers and computer technology has had in how they operate and thereby how they relate in a sociological manager to each other and to members of society. Simply put, computer sciences impact all societal groups. ... Research continues to demonstrate that individuals are greatly influenced by one’s social class in many ways, and it is evident you computer knowledge and relevancy impact those individual factors such as education and employment. ... Within groups, there is interaction, both verbal and nonverbal, computer influenced and not, and the overall groups’ structure as well as the interaction itself great influences the attitudes and behaviors of individuals within groups.
By these sociological definitions, it is easy to see how computers aren’t just for mathematics, science and other areas where they help people do work and play, but that computers are actually impacting the social order of a society and it will be important for future sociologists to study computer sciences and to be familiar with how computers work and how people use them to relate to each other and their own personal situations in order to fully understand the make-up of today’s and the future’s society.
