Depression is a devastating illness that is extremely debilitating, even to the point of suicide in some cases. ...

“Common symptoms of depression in adults include persistent feelings of sadness, loss of pleasure in usual activities, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness, changes in sleep and appetite, enervation/restlessness and thoughts of death or suicide. Depression in adult males is often masked by alcohol or drugs and is sometimes presented as irritability, anger or discouragement. Women experience depression about twice as often as men, with many women particularly vulnerable to depression after the birth of a baby.
Common symptoms of depression in children and adolescents may also include frequent nonspecific physical complaints (aches, tiredness); frequent absence from school or poor performance in school; running away from home; outbursts (shouting, complaining unexplained irritability or crying); social isolation; extreme sensitivity to rejection or failure; increased irritability, anger or hostility; and difficulty with relationships.” (PR Newswire Association, 2001)
With so many different symptoms to be on the lookout for, one must have a firm grasp with reality to understand that depression is an extremely serious disease and that one must be careful to recognize signs of such a condition in themselves.
