Describe and evaluate Freud’s theory of Psychosexual developments
“Freud’s theory has had and enormous impact on both psychological and philosophical conceptions of human nature”, however what are the criticisms that have been made about his work? ... Freud believed that there were five stages of psychosexual development: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital. ... The id is therefore not being ‘controlled’ and the child will want to be satisfied and Freud believed that if the child was not satisfied then they would become fixated and not progress to the more mature stages of psychosexual development. ... It is during this stage that gender development really happens. The child will begin to notice the differences between males and females and according to Freud they would direct their sexual impulses towards the opposite sex parent. ...
The main development in this stage is not desiring the opposite sex parent but learning to identify with the same sex parent and learning the gender behaviour. Freud believed that the identification with the same sex parent led to the beginning of the super-egos development.
