When most people think of alcohol, they think of bars, drinks, and DUIs, but what is alcohol? The alcohol that most people are reffering to is ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, but there are actually many kinds of alcohol. ... Either way, they have certain effects on the human system. So what is it that causes the human body to react to alcohol the way it does?
First, it is important to understand the different drinks that include alcohol in them and what concentration of alcohol they have. ... 5 percent alcohol, while wine is around 11 percent, and distilled spirits (rum, gin, vodka, etc.) range anywhere from 40 to 95 percent alcohol. When the alcohol is consumed, about 20 percent of it is absorbed into the stomach and the other 80 percent is absorbed in the small intestine. ... After being absorbed, the alcohol enters the bloodstream and thus enters all the muscles in the body. The alcohol is then expelled in three ways. ... This is done when an enzyme called dehydrogenase takes electrons from the alcohol to make it into acetaldehyde which is changed into acetic acid by another enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase.
