Two centuries of industrial development have made life better for many people in ways that would have been unimaginable even a generation ago. ... What we need now is a “different kind of development, one which meets people’s needs without compromising our future” (Lucy Parker, 86). According to Maureen Silos “For this to be sustainable, we must take full account of the social, economic and environmental impacts of our decisions, over the long term” (163).
Gillian Lindsay-Nanton, Jamaica’s United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, defines Sustainable Development as the process of development which ensures that people have improved access to health, knowledge and skills and the best utilization of these capabilities for a better life through the active participation in political, economic and social affairs (Lindsay-Nanton). She said, “Sustainable Development also ensures that development does not proceed at the expense of the environment and that the ability of future generations to enjoy the earth’s resources is not compromised” (Lindsay-Nanton).
In essence Sustainable development is a “metafix” that will unite everybody from the profit-minded industrialist and risk-minimizing subsistence farmer to the equity-seeking social worker, the pollution-concerned or wildlife-loving First Worlder, the growth-maximizing policy maker, the goal-oriented bureaucrat, and therefore, the vote-counting politician.
