Excretory System The excretory system dispose of metabolic wastes and responds to imbalances in the body. “Most excretory systems produce urine by refining a filtrate derived from body fluids.” (Campbell, Reece, Mitchell 879) The kidneys remove the excess salt. The liver acts as a filter for the blood. The skin is also plays a major role in the excretory system. The skin gets rid of excess water, salts, and wastes such as urea. The waste materials the excretory system gets rid of are ammonia, urea, and uric acid. Most aquatic animals excrete ammonia. It is common in invertebrates that the ammonia diffuses across the whole body surface into the surrounding water. Most fishes excrete ammonia in the form of ammonium NH4+. Mammals and amphibians excrete urea because ammonia is too toxic for the creatures.
