Eating disorders are common among Americans today. "15% of young women have substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors." (Eating Disorders Statistics) Doctors do not have a defenite explanation of why people may develop these disorders but, "low self-esteem, depression, feelings of loss of control, feelings of worthlessness, identity concerns, family communication problems or an inability to cope with emotions" are seen as common causes for these disorders. (Rader Programs) Another explaination for these disorders is the medias influence on what the perfect body should look like. According to Anorexia Nervosa and related eating disorders Incorporated, the average woman is five feet four inches tall, wieghs one hundred and forty-five pounds and wears a dress size anywhere between an eleven and a fourteen, but yet even as kids we are taught that our Barbie dolls are the ideal women, six feet tall, weighing one hundred and one pounds and wearing a dress size of four. (Eating Disorders Statistics) Everything from personal issues to the medias view of a perfect body cause the three most common eating disorders, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Compulsive Overeating. ... " (Facts About Eating Disorders and the Search for Solutions) Signs of an anorectic may include, skipping meals, cutting food into tiny pieces or wieghing food before consuming them and excessive exercise. ... " (Eating Disorders Statistics) If drawn-out Anorexia can cause many seriouse health risks such as changes in reproductive hormones and in thyroid hormones, this can cause absence of menstruation, infertility, bone loss and retarded growth.
