A woman gets out of her washroom and is relaxed due to a comfortable bubble bath. As she gets dressed, she feels like the ground is slightly trembling, but she ignores this and believes it’s just her imagination. The shaking rapidly becomes violent, and she realizes maybe it’s not her imagination. She starts literally freaking out. She becomes so frantic that she begins to run around in circles. It’s not long before objects begin to drop and things are crashing on the ground as she runs. What could this be? This is the beginning of a severe earthquake. In British Columbia, we experience earthquakes everyday, but they are hardly felt and rarely cause damage. However, an earthquake is also one of the most destructive events of nature. So what exactly is an earthquake? An earthquake can be simply defined as a sudden movement of the Earth due to the sudden discharge of strain that has built up over a period of time. What happens during an earthquake is the ground becomes deformed, buildings and other structures collapse, and tsunamis are created. Many people also lose their lives through earthquakes. Earthquakes are caused by cracks in the Earth’s crust, called faults, where rocks on either side of the crack have moved. They’re caused when stress, that which has accumulated over time, abruptly releases.
