Biography of Sigmund Freud Sigismund Schlomo Freud was born on May 6th 1856 in Freiberg. Sigismund Freud was the first of seven children. His household was Jewish and felt an animosity to his father at an early age. Later Sigismund and his family moved to Vienna. Freud eventually was awarded a degree in medicine after changing his name to Sigmund Freud and a stint in the army. 2 Sigmund Freud began his studies of the mind while he was studying hypnosis as a medical technique. He intensely studied hysteria and its relationship with the mind. His findings are published in Studies on Hysteria. After his father’s death he worked on the meaning of dreams and interpreting them. He considered this to be among his most important work.
