Genetic Bottlenecks
WHAT IS A GENETIC BOTTLENECK? Imagine a race; a marathon, perhaps. Three thousand people have gathered to run down the streets of some city. The gun fires, and the herds of runners take off. The race starts with no problems, except for the three-foot wide path they all must run through a hundred yards from the starting line. Now, we have a problem. Imagine the three thousand runners all trying to wedge through the sidewalk-sized space at one time. Only a few of the runners are going to get through any time soon. This is a bottleneck. A genetic bottleneck operates in the same manner. Due to catastrophe, migration, or human intervention, a very small population of a species will be the remainder of what used to be a comparatively large population.
