Getting Cured or Just Getting High?

Should we be able to smoke marijuana for medical purposes, and should doctors be able to recommend it if it can help cure a disease? The debate over using medical marijuana began as early as the 1930’s when Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act which made the use of marijuana illegal (Frontline…par. 12). Later after much research had been done, many started to see that marijuana could have great medical benefits. In 1996 California passed Proposition 215 which allowed the use of medical marijuana under state law (Schneider par. 2). Many Americans started to rethink the issue, and according to a 1999 Gallop Pole about 73 percent of Americans were now in favor of medical use of marijuana (American… par. 7). There is still a lot of debate going on over the ethical uses of marijuana. A compromise agreement needs to be put in place that would restrict marijuana so that it is not abused; also each state should be able to decide what policy it wants for medical marijuana. Unfortunately, federal officials’ views on medical marijuana have not changed. The Bush administration has been trying to punish doctors for recommending marijuana or even talking to their patients about the benefits marijuana might offer (Kovner par. 7). Many federal officials, including those in the Clinton administration, have been trying to stop supporters of medical marijuana. A great setback on the Bush administration efforts came on Oct. 14, 2003, when the United States Supreme Court banned federal officials from punishing doctors who recommended marijuana to their patients (Kravets par. 1). The ruling was a victory for the nine states in the U.S. that allow the use of medical marijuana including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon and Washington (Mears par.
