This animal has been classified by the California Department of Fish and Game as a game species since 1948 (www. ... In 1957 a law was passed that requires hunters to purchase bear tags and when a kill is made, the tag has to be reported to the Department of Fish and Game. These tags provide information on locality and date of kill as well as the sex and age (adult or cub) of the bear.
Cooperative efforts of hunters and biologists have shown an increase in California’s black bear population.
