This definition of plastics extracted from the ‘Gale Encyclopedia of Science’ sums up what plastics are today, the definition may seem extremely broad since in encompasses a very large proportion of the everyday objects and machines that we have around us. So now knowing what an important role plastics have in our world today we can look at the development of plastics over history with a more discerning eye. ... Bakelite showed society the potential of plastics which started off a chain of new inventions and improvements throughout the twentieth century and is set to continue through the twenty first. Many plastics were developed after Bakelite, one of the most noticeable today being polyethylene which was stumbled upon by two research chemists E. ... A series of inventions continued on including new plastics and developments of the plastics previously invented. Plastics in still a modern industry although it dates back to the early nineteenth century and improvements are being made all the time. Developing lighter materials for aeronautical use and stronger materials for construction, the future of plastics is still being created.
Plastics – Good or Bad?
Plastics have been used in society since Bakelite first came on the scene in 1839, steadily plastic usage increased until in 1976 plastic was declared the most used material in the world. Since 1976 plastic usage has increased much more, giving great advantages to society and disadvantages including destruction of nature caused both by the production of plastics and the waste/pollution created because of them.
Since the production of the first plastic society has benefited from bakelite being used in the insulation of electrical wires to today when plastics are seen everywhere, so much so that the benefits are often taken for granted.
