IS GENETIC ENGINEERING
ETHICAL?
Genetic Engineering is the alteration of an organism’s genetic, or heredity, material to eliminate undesirable characteristics or to produce desirable ones. Genetic engineering is used to increase plant and animal food production; to diagnose disease, improve medical treatment, and produce vaccines and other useful drugs; and to help dispose of industrial wastes. Included in genetic engineering techniques are the selective breeding of plants and animals, hybridization (reproduction between different strains or species), and recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
Genetic engineering is a by-product of the relatively young science that emerged out of the pioneering work of the Austrian, Augustinian priest, Gregory Mendel. ... In light of Watson and Crick’s discovery, biologists began to realize that by changing the ordering pattern of the genetic material they could change or modify life forms.
In debating the ethics of genetic engineering it is essential to develop and appropriate ethical framework for this now and powerful technology which can literally transform life itself.
