Morihei Ueshiba was born on December 14, 1883 in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture (Ueshiba, 8). Ueshiba was the fourth child and eldest son of Yoroku Ueshiba, a wealthy farmer who was a greatly respected member of the local community (8). Ueshiba’s mother Yuki Itokawa was also well respected by the community as she came from a landowning family of noble descent (8). When Ueshiba was only 7 years old, he was sent to Jizodera, which was a Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect to study Confucian classics and Buddhist scriptures (8). Ueshiba’s life was relatively quiet and he went through the years of Elementary school and Middle school rather quickly. At the age of 13, Ueshiba left middle school before graduating and attended instead the Yoshida Abacus Institute (8). Upon graduation, Ueshiba moved to Toyko and opened a stationary store of which he enjoyed being a businessman (Pranin). It was around this time period that Ueshiba began studying the martial arts learning traditional Jujutsu and kenjutsu (Ueshiba 8). These forms of fighting were fast becoming popular through the great teacher Shinra Saburo Yoshimitsu (Shioda, 12). Ueshiba became married to Hatsu Itokawa, his childhood love (8).
