isolation of skin microbes The skin is about 2m2 in area and is therefore the largest organ of the body. It would seem that the skin would be highly susceptible to the growth of a large number of microorganisms. However the skin itself is a barrier to the inhabitation by many microorganisms. The epidermis, the surface of the skin, is a very dry environment and microbes are not able to survive there.
Sebaceous glands, glands associated with hair follicles in the dermis, secrete lactic acid and fatty acids to lower the pH of the skin.
