African Americans have been through many hardships over the course of history. ... Nevertheless, African Americans along with other cultures have to face the deadly disease known as AIDS. ... population, yet they represented 41% of reported AIDS cases in 1996. Some 55% of women with AIDS are African-American, while 58% of pediatric AIDS cases are among African-American children. Since 1991 AIDS has been the leading cause of death in African-American men aged 25-44, and in 1994 the disease became the number one killer of African-American women of the same age group (Business Wire). Since this is such a big issue, what is being done about it? ... doing an effective job at educating African Americans about AIDS? I feel that our communities are doing their best in fighting the disease. They are really starting to crack down on educating the people about the virus.
African-Americans, in general, face a bigger chance of suffering from of health problems such as: tuberculosis and hepatitis. ... And many African-Americans continue to say AIDS is the disease of the gay white man and dont see themselves at the risk of AIDS. This assumption has become the leading cause of death among African-Americans ages 25 to 44. ... Conclusions about the virus can get mixed up with attitudes about homosexuality. Some heterosexuals, including African-Americans, believe their sexual orientation protects them from AIDS. ... “A study released last month reported that HIV-positive African-American and Hispanic men were more likely to have sex with both men and women than their white counterparts. But African-American and Hispanic women were less likely than white women to know their sex partners sexual practices. Some health experts believe that men who have sex with both men and women are the primary cause of the rapid spread of HIV in minority communities, especially among black women” (Shelton).
HIV/AIDS can be fought in many ways, one of which is to get the churches involved in the community. It is understandable that it will be difficult to prove to congress that government funding to churches to educate the community about safe sex does not violate the separation of church and government. ... Religion plays a big role in the fight against AIDS, because it teaches people to save themselves or practice abstinence until marriage.
