The station has won many awards for its wetland conservation program and is known world wide for its attempts to re-establish native species in Australia. I collected the information for this report during a science trip to Banrock Station. The information was spread out over the 8km boardwalk trail that was situated near the Banrock Station winery. ... The History of Banrock Station Aboriginals lived in the land surrounding Banrock for around 20,000 years. In 1852 the early European settlers began pastoral grazing on the wetland grasses around the area. ... It also caused a rise in the water tables in the Banrock floodplain. This caused a rise in salt levels and killed off many box trees in low lying areas In 1992 sheep were removed from Banrock Station and grazing ceased. ... At this time Wetland Care Australia had commenced a small amount of restoration work with the previous owners. This then resulted in a large-scale wetland management plan being developed by Banrock Station with the assistance of Wetland Care Australia. And it is because of this plan that Banrock Station exists as we know it today. What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity is the number and variety of organisms found within a specified geographic region. Banrock Station is employing many practices to enhance the biodiversity of the surrounding area. The people at Banrock Station realise that if the native plants and animals continued to live and breed in the way that they have been in the recent past, the gene pool of certain species could be seriously depleted. ... Banrock station is trying to increase the variety of the gene pool with many species around their area. What is Conservation? |
