Done with the burdensome depth of feeling, I just wanted some superficial happiness. We both knew the split was coming and we talked it over. Long story short, we both knew a breakup was for the best, and we split just before school got out for the summer. Right before the split, I tried to fit in with the popular partiers. Changed the way I acted, shut out deep feelings, and didn’t talk about me and Lucy, and about how we were pretty much done. But I didn’t feel myself around any of the people I wished to be friends with, though, I just wanted to party, drink, be a jerk, whatever it took to get the upper hand on some shallow excitement.
