Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida and the second largest freshwater body in the United States only after Lake Michigan. The lake’s name meaning “big water” in Seminole language is 730 square miles wide, but only averages a depth of about ten feet. ... The lake runs into the Gulf of Mexico by way of the Okeechobee Waterway and extends to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the St. ... The manmade levees and floodgates have been the source of many problems in the area, because the levees have turned the lake into a giant soup bowl of pollutants unable to rid itself of the waste in the lake.
The many dairies around Lake Okeechobee provide South Florida as well as other parts of the country with milk. There are 24 dairies upstream from the lake and many of the cow owners give the cows high-phosphorus feed.
