Developmental Psychology The process of human growth. Human grows in 8 stages: prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and older adulthood. Each stage consists of three phases: physical (motor skills and physical character), psychosocial (personality and social skills), and cognitive skills (mental ability, thought perception, reasoning memory, problem solving, language development and imagination). Cohorts An associate sharing a particular experience either statistical or demographic. Teaching Experience I am currently teaching at P.S. 32 in the Bronx. I have been working at my current school for four years. I began as an assistant teacher in Pre-Kindergarten. On completion of my degree, I was offered a position as a kindergarten teacher at P.S. 32. I have worked in one other school before my current location. My first year was very difficult, I took over a class that was very tough. After that year I said I was not coming back in the classroom. Then during the summer after sharing my experience with veteran teachers, I realized I was not isolated and it was not a personal issue. I was advised to try it out for one more year. I did. It was the most memorable year I have had so far. I am really happy my mentors convinced me to go back in the classroom. I felt I overcame the challenges and I could not see myself doing anything else other than working with children. I enjoy working with children; however, I enjoy seeing them learn and help others. As a teacher my goal is to have children become productive in a positive way and become lifetime learners. I really enjoy teaching at my current class; however, I think I would like to experience another school. Prenatal The development of a human life in the uterus. Trimesters are 3-month segments. Growth occurs in each stage. The first trimester extend from the day of conception to the thirteenth week. The second is from thirteen to twenty-five weeks. Finally, the third is from twenty-five to the day of birth. Infancy Infancy spans from the first month outside the womb to twenty-four months of age. They begin learning by imitating facial expressions. The first four months infants begin to double in weight. The head is the largest of their body; bones are still soft like cartilage. The gross motor skills begin to show refinement and allows for creeping and then holding on to furniture to walk. Cognitive development begins with the sensorimotor period (Craig 152). Infants begin to demonstrate language behavior by smiling when they are talked to. Early Childhood Early Childhood is the age from two to six years of age. Children go through physical changes during early childhood. The physical growth is the result of genetics, nutrition, and the opportunity to play and exercise. Young children body begins to change. The first two years of growth is rapid. The head becomes larger than the body.
