Alliances within communities of land mammals and birds have been reported quite commonly; however, Tursiops truncate (bottlenose dolphins) rarely form these social hierarchies. In fact, prior to 1991, only two reports of coalition between cetaceans [bottlenose dolphins and spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata)] had been observed and neither study determined the purpose of the cetaceans’ behavior. This paper identifies the purpose of the behaviors concerning coexisting members of a populace of Tursiops truncates located in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Galveston Island, Texas.
