Mars is named after the Roman God of war, most likely due to its reddish surface color. Because of its red color Mars is also known to us as the Red Planet. Mars was first successfully observed by the Dutch physicist Christian Huygens in 1659 using a telescope he made. ...
One of the areas we are successful in is our missions to study Mars. Mariner 4, the sister probe to Mariner 3, did reach Mars in 1965 and took the first close-up images of its surface as it flew past the planet. Long ago Mars was a lot more like Earth. Just like Earth, most of Mars’ carbon dioxide was used up to create carbonate rocks. But not having plate tectonics like Earth, Mars cannot recycle any of this carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere thus cannot sustain a significant greenhouse effect. Because of this the surface of Mars is much colder than the Earth would be at that distance from the Sun. ... Many scientists concluded from this first scan that Mars was a "dead" world in both the geological and biological sense. Several other probes followed Mariner 4 to survey Mars, one of which was Mars 2. Mars 2 was the first craft to land on Mars and it was followed by the two Viking landers in 1976. After 20 years of inactivity, Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars on 1997 July 4. ...
Mars orbit is noticeably elliptical. ... Because if this, the influence on the climate of Mars is significant.
