Negative Effects of Algae

There are thousands of different species of algae that exist in bodies of water throughout the world. ... On the other hand, there are a few species that produce damaging effects, which not only harm the surrounding aquatic life, but also have a grave effect on the economy. Algae are known to negatively affect the boats, fishing industries, irrigation systems, and furthermore, they aid in the production of acid rain.
A few types of algae are known to produce harmful toxins, which creates what is referred to as a bloom. An algal bloom occurs when there is a large increase in algal growth causing an accumulation of algae into dense patches that appear on the surface of the water. ... Theses effects can create not only a health hazard but also can produce a huge economic loss to the fishing industry. ... Along with these effects, toxins can also spoil entire harvest of shellfish producing a detrimental effect to their export and the seafood economy.
Algae can also effect some terrestrial animals as well as fish and shellfish. For example, various species of blue-green algae, such as the Nodularia spumigena and Microcystis aeruginosa, which produce toxins through algal blooms, are known to poison cattle upon contamination of their water system (Hallegraeff, 1992). In this way, the toxic effects of algal blooms may significantly affect even terrestrial cash crops such as livestock.
Algae does not only produce harmful toxins that can be damaging to an economy, but their excessive growth can be detrimental to the economy as well. Algae is known to grow so quickly that when placed in desirable environmental conditions, it can end up clogging an irrigation canals, which blocks water flow, limiting the effectiveness of a canal.
