Oil Spills

|
Oil spills into rivers, oceans, and bays are caused by unfortunate accidents by tankers, barges, pipelines, storage faculties, and refineries, usually while the oil is being transported from place to place. The spills can be caused by: people making mistakes or being careless, equipment breaking down, natural disasters such as hurricanes, deliberate acts such as terrorists, countries at war, vandals etc. But, you can clearly tell that human error is involved in a majority of these spills. Workers are scheduled to do routine maintenance, as well as the facility performing and logging periodic inspections dealing with the prevention of accidental oil spills. ... First of all oil spills can be harmful to marine birds and mammals, and also can harm fish and shellfish. Oil is probably most harmful to fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water-repelling abilities of bird’s feathers. Next, the animals and birds end up ingesting oil when they then try to clean themselves, which can poison causing them to therefore die or be injured. Sometimes when the spill involves offshore oil wells, or tankers, some of the oil initially catches fire.
