... Norms are standards of behavior, rules for conduct, what the group expects its members to do. ... To belong to a group is to yield to others the right to make to make certain decisions about our behavior, while assuming obligations to act according to the expectations of those others. ... I’ve been thinking about social norms for a long time even before I started this paper, and have always wondered if there’s a fine line between adhering to norms and hypocrisy. ... And what better place to locate this group than the people waiting in line at the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services? ... Usually around 100 people wait in line to be the first batch to enter at 7:30 am.
The norm in this social context is that people would arrive, wait in line patiently (after all they’re only doing it for themselves), till 7:30 am when the security guards opened the doors to the office. Some people may follow the folkway of maybe occasionally smile, say “hello” or nod friendly to others in line. ... Most of them got there, looked around to see how long the line was, found the end of the line and stood there quietly. ... It seemed like they brought them over just so that they’ll have somebody to talk to while waiting in line. ... There were some petty shops that looked like their whole business depended on the people waiting in line. ... If I were standing in line, I would have been very upset at this. ...
My observation made me think why these people act the way they do. ... I have realized that, even though social behaviors differ from person to person, adhering to norms is not a personal choice; it’s a way of life.
