Organic Molecules and Biology
Organic molecules have certain structures that correlate with the the characteristics they hold and functions the molecule may have. Within living organisms, enzymes and phospholipids use their specific structures to provide for a cell, by either acting as a catalyst or forming a phosphate bilayer. Enzymes in cells act as catalytic centers for substrates. Each enzyme has a unique active site, which can only bond with specific substrates that fit correctly into this active site. Once the substrate and enzyme are joined (generally by weak hydrogen bonds) the enzyme fits snugly around it; later eventually products will be released.
