How Roller Coasters Work http://science.howstuffworks.com/roller-coaster1.htm Roller coasters may look like passenger trains, but work nothing like them. Roller coasters have no engine or power source. A ride is only moved by gravity and inertia. The only energy used is when the coaster is pulled up the lift hill in the beginning of the ride. As the coaster gets higher in the air, the further gravity can pull it down. At the top of the first lift hill, there is maximum potential energy, because this is as high as the train will get. As the train is released, and goes down the hill, it is now kinetic energy- energy of movement.
