SPACE LIVING AND ETHICS Each year the earth becomes more and more populated while its natural resources become more and more depleted. ... One concept that scientists are researching for a potential solution is the space settlement. The space settlement concept, which is not a colony built on a planet or moon, but a habitat in a pressurized sphere (donut shaped), “rotating on its axis so that centrifugal force serves as an artificial gravity,” (Combs 3). ... An important concept of the space settlement is that materials such as oxygen, water, and wastes must continuously be recycled back into the environment so pollution would be at a minimum (Globus 1). One reason why a space settlement is more idealistic than a colony on the moon or another planet is that a settlement could have access to 24 hour per day sunlight. ... Having access to 24 hour per day sunlight is how the space settlement would be powered. ... A space based solar concentrator the size of a football field (which could still weigh less than a car) could provide process heat equivalent to the burning of one million barrels of oil over 30 years,” (Combs 4). An important advantage that space settlements have over colonies is that settlers could still visit the earth. ... Another advantage that settlements would have over colonies is that inter stellar travel and the recreation of more space settlements without overpopulating space could be possible. ... As an example, if the largest asteroid was torn apart and used to build other settlements, “the total living area created would be approximately 500 times the surface area of the earth. ... Even though this type of example would not happen for a number of decades, it states the key advantage of space settlements, which “…is the ability to build new land rather than take it from someone else,” (Globus 3). ... The first space settlements wont exist for many years due to the mass funding and research and technology needed. ... If there was a collision to earth while space settlements were in orbit, the settlements could lend support to earth and supply aid. Besides surviving a devastating collision from an asteroid hitting the earth, space settlements have other benefits as well. ... “Space settlements offer an alternative to changing human nature or endless conflict—the ability to live in fairly homogeneous groups, as has been the norm throughout hundreds of thousands of years of human existence,” (Globus 4). ... Another special group that could benefit from space settlements are the handicapped. ... The reason why space settlements are a more likely solution than space colonies on Mars or Venus is that settlements could be built with the technology that is available today. ... To say that Mars could be made livable in the near future would almost double the land space that humans could occupy. |
