Everyone has heard of global warming but do they really understand what it is? ... Along with the many causes of Global Warming must come its effects. One of the main effects of global warming is Sea Level Rise.
Sea Level Rising occurs due to the increased temperatures caused by global warming, which in turn cause the polar ice caps to melt. ... The global-mean sea level rose at least 10 cm during the 20th century. This rise is expected to continue and most likely accelerate due to human-induced warming during the 21st century. While the sea level rise will affect only those living at the coast directly, the impact on ecosystems in the ocean will affect the amount of food from the sea for people everywhere.
Scientist are fervently trying to find ways to counter act the effects that the rising waters are causing, which includes island and beach erosion. ... Evidence of the public’s ignorance of the inevitable impact of Sea Level Rising is shown in the millions of people that are flocking to the coast. ... But the frightening prospect of the sea swallowing people’s beachfront homes and condos apparently has no effect on them. ... Shopping malls, hi-rise hotels, and numerous businesses have been built to support the vast populations on these beaches, and continue to be built. ... This elevation of erosion occurs when the Sea Level Rise causes the water in the ocean to wash against these structures. The buildings interrupt the natural ebb and flow of the sand and this causes the beach directly in front of the structure to be literally sucked out to sea. ... But people that live on main land coast are not the only ones directly effected by sea level rise, island dwellers are perhaps even more so affected. ... Rising sea levels, winds, and currents are constantly eroding beaches, and in fact whole islands are disappearing.
