Chemical ChangeMatter -anything that has mass and occupies spaceElement -a pure substance which cannot be broken down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical methodsAtom -the smallest particle of an element that has all the chemical properties of that element. An atom is electrically neutral. The atom consists of three basic subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons occupy the central area of the atom called the nucleus. The electrons occupy the area around the nucleus. The proton has a positive charge and mass of 1.0073uThe neutron has no charge and a mass of 1.0087uThe electron has a negative charge ad a mass of 0.00055uAn atom is neutral. Therefore, in any atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons. Atoms of one element differ from atoms of another element in their number of protons. The number of protons in an atom is called the atomic number.Ex.
