Research Methods in Psychology Practical Report
Title: Testing the effects of gender and hand dominance on simple reaction time.
The following independent variables were used:
1) gender
2) hand dominance,
The independent variable being reaction time.
Abstract
The area of psychology that this report is concerned with is that of reaction time. Psychologists have extensively studied various types of reaction time and the factors affecting them. The experiment detailed in this report was done in order to determine whether two factors, gender and hand dominance, might affect participants’ ability to perform in a simple reaction time task. The independent variables therefore were gender and use of the dominant or non-dominant hand, the dependent variable being the participants’ reaction time in the task. The results found that there was no significant difference between genders or which hand was used, forming the conclusion that perhaps a larger sample size would be needed in order to highlight any possible differences. The general area of psychology that this report is concerned with is that of cognitive psychology, in particular simple reaction time.
