MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM The male reproductive system consist of those organs whose functions are to produce mature sperm and to introduce them into the female reproductive tract where they can fertilize the mature ova TESTES The testes are 2 oval glands surrounded by a connective tissue capsule the tunica albuginea. Inward extensions from the tunica septa which divides the testes into lobules. Each lobule contains 1 to 3 tiny coiled tubules, the seminiferous tubules in which are found sperm cell in various stages of development. Located among the germinal cells of the tubules are many large cells called sustentacular cells of Sertolu that provide nourishment to spermatozoa. Between the seminiferous tubules are cluster of epitheloid cells termed as interstitial cell of Leydig. The seminiferous tubules are drained by short, straight vessels, the tubuli recti into a network of anastomosing tubules known as rete testis located at the posterior margin of the testis. In the early fetal life, the testes lie in the abdominal cavity but about 2 months before birth, they descend with the spermatic cord along their respective inguinal canals into the scrotum. Occasionally the testes fail to descend, but remain in the abdomen, giving rise to a condition called cryptorchism. The end result of undescended testes is sterility because spermatogenesis ( formation of male sex cells) can occur only at the scrotal temperature which is lower than that of the abdominal cavity. Functions: 1. Spermatogenesis – production of sperms by a semiferous tubules. 2. Secretion of testosterone by interstitial cells of Leydig. BULBO-URETHRAL GLANDS The bulbo-urethral glands are 2 small rounded, pea sized, glands lying on either side of the membranous urethra Functions: Secretes a limy, viscid, alkaline substance which serves to 1. Lubricate the urethra 2. Neutralize the acidity in both male and female urethra PROSTATE GLAND The prostate is a single pyramidal-shaped gland, about the size of a walnut, lying below the urinary bladder and surrounding the proximal part of the urethra Functions: Secretes an alkaline fluid to: 1. Help neutralize the acid vaginal secretions 2. Increase sperm motility 3. Aids in ejaculation by contraction of its smooth muscle capsule SEMINAL VESICLE The seminal vesicles are 2 elongated, coiled blind-ending saccular glands lying on either side of the posterior surface of the urinary bladder. Its duct joins with the vas deferens to form the ejaculatory duct. Functions: Secretes an alkaline substance which serves to 1. Help neutralize the acid vaginal secretions 2. Provide nutrients to the sperm 3. Increase sperm motility EPIDIDYMIS The epididymis is a long convoluted tube lying posterior to the testes Functions: 1. Serves as reservoir for sperms 2. Secretes a small part of the seminal fluid (semen) VAS DEFERENS The vas deferens is a straight tube which ascends from the testis, passes out of the scrotum, transverses the inguinal canal to enter the abdomen. Posterior to the urinary baladder, it unites with the duct of the seminal vesicle the ejaculatory duct. Functions: Serves as storage for seminal fluid Vasectomy- cutting of the vas deferens thru incision in the groin and results in sterility in male. EJACULATORY DUCT The ejaculatory duct are short, thin-walled tubes formed by the union of the vas deferens and duct of seminal vesicles. It passes thru the prostate gland to open into the prostatic urethra. URETHRA The male urethra which serves as a common passage for both urine and semen is divided into 3 regions. 1. the prostatic urethra 2. the membranous urethra 3. the penile urethra PENIS The penis, the male organ of copulation, is composed of 3 longitudinal cylindrical columns of erectile tissues.
