To Understand the Concepts with the Similarities and Differences Between Fermentation and Cellular Respiration

Introduction- Cellular respiration provides the cells with the energy that they need to maintain homeostasis. ... When cellular respiration takes place, if oxygen is present, glucose can then be broken down into water, carbon dioxide, and energy that is captured in the form of ATP. ... In the second experiment we are to determine if cellular respiration took place or not, we do this by measuring an organism’s metabolic rate by monitoring its production of carbon dioxide. In the last experiment we will determine if fermentation has taken place or not, the two major fermentations result in lactic acid or ethanol and carbon dioxide.
Materials and Methods-
Experiment 1- In the first experiment we will use a respiration chamber, potassium hydroxide, and a mouse. Follow the following steps to perform the experiment (Taken from Biology 1406 & 1408 Lab Manuel, Fourth Edition, by Bell, Butler, Cardenas, Helgeson, McCulloch, Rich, Weis, Whitney)
A) Place approximately 25-30 g of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in the respiration chamber. ... Place the animal in the respiration chamber and cover the chamber with a paper towel or a jacket to shield the animal from light and provide a calm environment. ... Securely insert the rubber stopper into the end of the respiration chamber. ...
F) After collecting sufficient data, remove the animal from the respiration chamber and return it to its cage. ...
Experiment 2- In the second experiment we will use peas, two respiration flasks, beaker, and phenol red. ... (Taken from Biology 1406 & 1408 Lab Manuel, Fourth Edition, by Bell, Butler, Cardenas, Helgeson, McCulloch, Rich, Weis, Whitney)
A) Fill the two respiration flasks half full of germinated peas.
