Water

Water contributes to the fitness of the environment to support life in many ways. More importantly, in comparison with other liquids, it takes much heat energy to change the temperature of water or to make it vaporize. This is because individual water molecules are polar and they stick together by means of hydrogen bonds. This fact about water enables it to effectively moderate temperatures on Earth. Organisms also depend on the cohesion of water molecules. Water is also less dense as a solid than a liquid, enabling it to float on water. This way, when water freezes, it does not sink to the bottom.
