... ”
Such is the speech with which Captain Jean-Luc Picard opens every episode of the television show Star Trek, a science fiction series telling the tale of the Enterprise and its crew traveling to distant star systems, each episode exploring new worlds and encountering new species of life. While it is a very successful television show, it owes much of its success to the writers who not only develop the scripts for each episode, but who are also responsible for getting together with real-life physicists who help envisage the gadgets of the future. And as time passes, and technology is improving at an ever-increasing rate, the gadgets on Star Trek are very quickly becoming common-place amongst everyday technology. Therefore, the writers of Star Trek are having a harder time keeping science fiction ahead of science fact. ...
As a ship with a mission of exploration, the Enterprise is equipped with all sorts of sensors, capable of analyzing planets or star systems and returning all sorts of information, like the material make-up of a planet, the population on that planet, and the weather conditions on that planet among other things. ... Science fiction of the 19th and early 20th century has sometimes referred to “ray guns”, a weapon built in shape like today’s handgun but instead firing out a beam of concentrated energy, like a laser beam, as oppose to bullets. ...
As for photon torpedoes, those remain, for now, works of fiction. ...
There are many more scientific wonders in Star Trek that are coming into reality in the 21st Century. ... The warp drive, known among today’s scientists as the more easily understandable “Faster-Than-Light drive”, is integral in the 24th Century, allowing the Enterprise to travel to distant star systems at speeds faster than light. ...
The other main wonder of science-fiction on the Enterprise is the transporter. In the 24th Century, the crew of the Enterprise does not have to land the ship every time they want to visit a certain planet or fly out in a shuttlecraft when wanting to go to a ship in distress. ...
The 24th Century as depicted by Star Trek is a very exciting time, filled with intergalactic exploration, massive multicultural communication between species of all shapes and sizes, and daring space battles. As we venture forth into the future, one might wonder if the physics of Star Trek will be feasible within the next 50 years. One thing is for certain: the writers of Star Trek are having a hard time keeping the science fiction of the Enterprise ahead of the science fact of today’s world.
