Why Might Dull Plumage and Conspicuous Songs Go Together

Scientific observations, most notably in the area of field biology, have discovered that birds with dull colored plumage, like the Carolina Wren and the thrush, often boast conspicuous songs. This observation instigates the question of why dull plumage and conspicuous songs might be paired together. I hypothesize that since these species of birds have such easily-recognized songs, their dull plumage is necessary for ensuring their survival, primarily functioning to camouflage them. ... These characteristics would help keep natural selection from acting on these bird species because these characteristics of these bird species (drab coloration and conspicuous songs) would have adapted or changed to enhance or aid them especially in survival and reproduction. Bird songs function in two primary ways; to establish territory among their species and to attract females of their species for the purpose of mating.
