In 1901 Stalin joined the Social Democratic Labour Party and whereas most of the leaders were living in exile, he stayed in Russia where he helped to organize industrial resistance to Tsarism. ... And then, eventually Lenin rewarded Stalin for his support of the October Revolution by appointing him Commissar of Nationalities. Later position gave Stalin a tremendous power, which he used to get rid of Lenin and some other of his opponents.
