Why do we have a death penalty, and why should we keep it? That is basically the question that I want to answer in this post. I firmly believe that the death penalty is a legitimate punishment for some crimes and should not be abolished. There are a couple reasons for this which I will be discussing here. The first reason that I want to address is the issue of deterrence. Deterrence is the threat of punishment or some other harm that will result from a particular action. This is really the only way that the law can be enforced, for without a threat of punishment, what restrains an individual that would otherwise be willing to rape or murder? Let’s look at the deterrence that the government has on its hands without the death penalty under the current system. If an individual is convicted of murder, he will be put in a cell where he can watch TV all day long with better food than he might get out on the street.
