Chaucer’s View of Religion
One of the main themes of The Canterbury Tales is the view of “The Church” and the people involved in organized religion in the Medieval times. ... By contrasting the placement of the characters in the religious hierarchy to their actual level of morality, Chaucer emphasizes the hypocrisy in the majority of the clergy, while preserving a pure view of Christianity through certain virtuous, secular characters. Chaucer uses The Canterbury Tales as a means of revealing the corruption of the Church in a period where religion was supposed to take precedence over every aspect of each person’s life. ... This resulted in a wide range of women with diluted faiths involved in the church. ... Chaucer uses the monk as a symbol for the group of men who saw the church and word of God as a secondary objective to living a life full of pleasures.
