The Changing Face Of War:
Is it For The Better? ... The face of war is changing, and not for the better. ... In order of paragraph, I am going to cover early warfare and it’s meaning to the people of the era, followed by the radical ideals that prompted war during World War II. Finally, I am going to give a brief description of current wars and the political and social effects they have on the world, and why war is taking a turn for the worst. ... If we examine not only the type of war being fought, but the motivation behind it, we can see that it was, in many ways, a much cleaner and honest affair. ... In fact, this was not so much a war as multiple families co-operating to fulfil one of the most ancient of human goals: to protect and further the clan. ... In short, the men of the medieval war were trusting in themselves to protect themselves and their families. In the Listener article ‘Pax Americana’ by Antony Beevor, the famous Chinese general Sun Tzu is quoted on the changing face of war before it even occurred:
“Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards. ... ”
This observation has several meanings, as pointed out in a modern-day examination of his book, Sun Tzu’s: The Art of War; that Sun Tzu meant not only that the ability to change strategy to suit the enemy was one that would result in victory, but that war would forever be changing. ... This simple and honest motivation for war, plus the encouragement to improve the individual leads me to believe that war has indeed changed for the worst.
