Scholarship Luncheon Speech What does “thank you” mean? You hear the words so often that they might sound hollow. I know two kinds of “thank yous.” There are the everyday courtesies paid to those who perform a favor or kindness. Then there are true “thank yous” – deep expressions of gratitude. These are the joyful tears, losses for words, strong embraces and I’ll-never-forget-yous. These are the “thank yous” my classmates and I owe you. It’s a small miracle that I chose Bonaventure to begin with. It was the last college I applied to. My father and I learned of the Jandoli journalism school’s excellent reputation, and he told me to apply “just for the heck of it.” I had my heart set on Syracuse University, Northwestern University and Ithaca College. Bonaventure accepted me, and I came to visit during Christmas break. No students or faculty – only my father and I, an admissions representative and the quiet, snow-covered campus. Something happened during that January tour. Bonaventure spoke to me. As I walked through the buildings and admired the surrounding hills, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that I was home.
