Another Year of Thrashers Hockey in Atlanta

Another season of Atlanta Thrashers hockey has ended again as abruptly as the winter. ... Through 71 games played this year he has notched 36 goals and 41 helpers tying last years mark. Unlike last year, where he was the set up man for Ilya Kovalchuk, this year is lining up with Slava Kozlov and Marc Savard. Not only has he been the go to guy on the Thrashers’ top line, but also on the power play. ... Not to mention he was voted the Most Valuable Player at the All-Star game in Florida this year. He tallied four goals and one assist on February 2nd earlier this year. With Heatley’s play, he received the mark higher than a five-puck rating, he receives the Most Valuable Player for the team this year.

(*****) ILYA KOVALCHUK- Runner-up to Dany Heatley last year in the Calder Cup race, his speed and puck handling skills rival player in the National Hockey League. Kovalchuk’s season ended last year with a separate shoulder, which occurred at the Nassau Center in New York last March. ... With Kovalchuk increasing his muscle, it enabled him this year, unlike last year, to grind along the boards and recover more lose pucks. ... With Bob Hartley taking over as the Bench Boss for the Thrashers, he has improved Kovalchuk’s defense three fold since he has joined the club. ...

(*****) Slava Kozlov- Don Waddell worked his magic to sign Slava Kozlov in last year’s off-season. What will be hard for Ol’Donny to do is sign him for next year. Kozlov is only being paid 750,000 dollars this year. ... If the Thrashers do not sign Kozlov for next year, the offense will be at a huge disadvantage. ... Kozlov is a vital role player in the Thrashers organization, which is why he deserves a five out of dive puck rating.

(****) PASI NURMINEN- After being drafted in the 6th round of the 2001 Entry Draft, Nurminen has become the Thrashers’ brick wall in front of the net this season. ... However, there were some nights Pasi checked out of games and cost the Thrashers some games, but due to his outstanding play this season I give him four out of five pucks.

(****) MARC SAVARD- Savard was traded for by Atlanta from Calgary. ... This was a huge deal for the Thrashers; picking up a solid center man who could center the top line. ... After two games in a Thrashers’ sweater, Savard pulled a groin, and was out for two weeks. ... Since Savard is a restricted free agent, he will be wearing a Thrashers jersey on his back for years to come. ...

(****) ANDY SUTTON- Sutton is the Thrashers’ best Defenseman at six foot six inches, 245 pounds. ...

(****) DAN SNYDER- Snyder has spent the past few seasons in Chicago; the Thrashers’ farm club. ... The rookie has the skill to play on the Thrashers’ second line; however, this is not his role. When Bob Hartley came to Atlanta, his mission was to find roles for each player on the team. Snyder’s role on the Thrashers reminds me of Gordie Howe- a goal, an assist, and a fight every game. His ability to be a hard-nose player along with some offense allows for the Thrashers’ fourth line to be productive.
