etween expectation in stanza one and reality in stanza two of life as being a progression towards decay, against which there is no remedy. “Blackberry Picking” is set in late August. Stanza one sets the scene of Heaney’s childhood experience and the optimism that the child feels. The use of the half rhyme at the end of each sentence creates a steady, almost exaggerated pace as though trying to keep up with the excitement of the child who is blackberry picking. The word choice “glossy purple”, “its flesh was so sweet” emphasizes the child’s desire for theses long awaited treasures.
