Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to determine if a high fat, low carbohydrate diet can alter the dependancy that the body has on glycogen as a primary fuel source during prolonged events. ... But in time (around five days), the body may be able to adapt to the utilization of fat during exercise due to carbohydrate deprivation. The Austrailian Institute of Sport conducted two studies on fat loading diets and their benefits to performance for endurance atheletes. The investigation fed trained cyclists a high fat, low carbohydrate diet for five days followed by one day of high carbohydrate intake to refuel glycogen stores before they performed an event on the seventh day. The athletes ingested a high carbohydrate breakfast and drank sports drink throughout the test to ensure that glycogen level was optimal. The second study did not include further carbohydrate intake on the seventh day. The study showed that the high fat diet did change the fuel source utilization during the event, but it did little to enhance performance, thus fat loading shows to be inefficient in to offer any benefits to endurance athletes. ... Carbohydrate Loading versus fat loading is stuffiest to my field in exercise science since I need to understand which energy source that the body depends on during different activities. Carbohydrate loading and hydration are important factors for athletes who perform prolonged events, lasting from 1 to 5 hours since the body uses muscle and liver glycogen and blood glucose primary energy sources. ...
Variables Examined
The high fat, low carbohydrate diet without the carbohydrate intake on the seventh day and the high fat, low carbohydrate diet with the carbohydrate intake on the seventh day are the independent variables and the cyclists performance is the dependent variable. ...
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is not clearly written although the generalizations that the researchers are trying to investigate are the effect of fat and carbohydrate metabolic adaptations on the performance of endurance cyclists (since fat adaptation has recently been promoted in some endurance sporting events as an ergogenic aid for competition preparation). ... It is based on sound reasoning since there is evidence that shows that an increase in fat in the diet while consuming a low carbohydrate diet increase the amount of fat oxidation during prolonged exercise, although the time to fatigue and performance has not been shown to be enhanced.
