Personal Development Assignment 1- Self-assessment and Personal Tutorial Introduction During this assignment I will be assessing the Student Qualities profile, and giving a general overview of the categories outlined on pages 14 and 15. By carrying out this assessment I will be practising and improving my self-assessment skills. I have been asked to examine each element of the profile, which will be the main focus of the assignment. Through looking at these categories I will identify key development objectives. This will help the quality of my planning ability, which will encourage progression through each of the student qualities. To continue the assessment, perceptions of past experiences will be examined to help develop these qualities. Feedback from others will also be collected to enable a second opinion to be compared, and further help the assessment of the profile. These people will include a friend as well as a personal tutor, who will discuss my skills assessment. A S.W.O.T analysis will be implemented in this assignment to improve self-awareness, in particular, the identification of personal skills arising from the feedback and analysis. Student Qualities Profile The first section to be assessed is section 2-Personal learning, which is mainly focusing on the way one goes about their learning and how they can improve. In each individual student quality, there is a grading system which I will assess myself against. The first skill under personal learning is approach to learning. Approach to learning is the way you think about subjects and the way you go about acquiring skills and attributes. I believe I am at grade D level, which is described as the competence to collect data and information. In other words, I see my learning as a collection of data, given by tutors or received through extra stimuli such as hand outs, work sheets and added reading. A reason for this grade is that I have been used to being in a school environment where the learning was directed and well supervised, and the information needed was given to me directly, unlike at university where I find I have trouble becoming proactive when for example, I have been given a research task, or independent learning. When assessing the quality called ‘Application of Learning’, which is how you apply your understanding to any situation, often called problem solving, I believe I am at a Grade C. This is stated as the ability to categorise and report expert interpretation. Through being set numerous assignments, I have learnt to categorise information, this compared to Grade D, where information is just reported. The third category under personal learning is called ‘Reflection and Self Assessment’. Before undertaking this module I was Grade D level. This is because I had never been asked to comment on my skills myself, and I have only received feedback through other people.
